Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) in Albania: A Patient's Guide

Otoplasty, commonly known as ear pinning surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to change the shape, position, or size of the ears. It's most often performed to correct ears that are prominent or "stick out" too far from the head, but it can also address oversized earlobes or other congenital ear shape issues.

For both children (typically over the age of 5, when ears are fully grown) and adults who have felt self-conscious about their ears for years, otoplasty can be a life-changing procedure that brings the ears into harmony with the rest of the face.

Am I a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

You might be a good candidate for otoplasty if:

  • You feel your ears are too prominent or stick out too far.
  • You are in good general health.
  • You have realistic expectations about the outcome.
  • For children, it's important that they are able to understand and cooperate with post-operative instructions.

The Otoplasty Procedure

Otoplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure that takes about 1-2 hours to perform.

  1. Anaesthesia: In adults, it can often be done under local anaesthesia with sedation. For children, general anaesthesia is always used.

  2. The Incision: The surgeon makes a discreet incision in the natural crease behind the ear. This placement ensures that the resulting scar is completely hidden from view.

  3. Reshaping the Cartilage: Through this incision, the surgeon accesses the ear cartilage. The technique used depends on the specific issue:

    • To correct prominence, the surgeon may use permanent internal sutures to fold the cartilage back on itself, creating a more defined antihelical fold (the inner rim of the ear).
    • In some cases, a small piece of cartilage may be removed to reduce the size of the concha (the bowl-shaped part of the ear).
  4. Closing the Incision: Once the ear is reshaped, the incision is closed with sutures.

Cost of Otoplasty in Albania

In Albania, an all-inclusive otoplasty package typically costs from €1,400. This is a significant saving compared to the UK or Western Europe, where the same procedure can cost €3,500 or more.

The package price generally includes the surgeon's fee, anaesthesia, clinic costs, a 4-5 day hotel stay, transfers, and post-operative care.

Recovery from Ear Surgery

  • Immediately After: Your head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage to protect the ears and promote proper healing. This is usually worn for 24-48 hours.

  • Week 1: Once the main bandage is removed, you will need to wear a soft, elastic headband (like a tennis headband) 24/7. This protects the ears from being accidentally pulled or bent, especially while sleeping. Some bruising and swelling is normal.

  • Week 2: Sutures are typically removed around day 7-10. You can return to work or school. The headband is now usually only required at night.

  • Weeks 4-6: You can resume most activities, including sports. However, contact sports where the ears could be hit should be avoided for a bit longer.

  • Final Result: While you will see a dramatic improvement as soon as the initial bandages come off, the final, settled result will be visible after about 3 months when all residual swelling has disappeared.

The results of otoplasty are permanent. For the many patients who have spent years hiding their ears with their hair or avoiding certain activities, the procedure provides a profound boost in confidence.
